The station was opened in 1876. The station was moved to its present location in 1933, which is also when the current station building was constructed. The station was considerably modified with the beginning of commuter rail service, including the construction of a second platform in 1971, but the station building itself is little changed.
Karlberg is at the western edge of a popular mixed-use area of central Stockholm called Vasastan, and is the northernmost of four stations served by all commuter trains. North of Karlberg, the commuter services diverge, one going to Bålsta via Sundbyberg and Jakobsberg, the other going to Märsta via Solna and Upplands Väsby. The next station south of Karlberg is Stockholm Central.
