Stockholm Saltsjöbanan (Slussen)

This station, opened on 22 December 1936, is single-track. Meets have to be scheduled at the next station outbound, Henriksdal. It included the first outdoor escalator in Stockholm, which was in use for about forty years. The station is now officially called Slussen, to correspond to the name of the subway station that is just inside and up a flight of stairs (or an elevator).

Slussen, train arriving

(10 July 2002)
An afternoon train arriving at Slussen. To the right are stores and a hot-dog stand, as well as an SL Center, which provides timetables and information and sells tickets. To the left is the large terminal for the buses to Nacka and Värmdö.

Slussen, side view of train

(10 July 2002)
A side view of the same train. The car types now used on Saltsjöbanan are called C10, C11 and C16. The "C" prefix indicates that they are essentially subway cars. The C10 and C11 cars were delivered in 1976, and were built for Saltsjöbanan in conjunction with an order for subway cars; the C16 cars, of which there are only two, came in 1987 and are rebuilt subway cars of type C6, hence the type designation C16. Note the "skirts" that had to be placed on each side of these cars to avoid an excessive gap between train and platform.

Slussen, electronic departure board

(10 July 2002)
A view of the electronic departure board at Slussen station. Unfortunately, the long exposure caused the text on each row to come out fuzzy. The board shows departures both for Saltsjöbanan and for the Nacka-Värmdö buses.

Slussen, bus terminal

(10 July 2002)
A view of the portion of the bus terminal immediately opposite the subway entrance, which is behind us in this view. The letters on the signs designate stop locations, which the signs key to the various bus line numbers.

Slussen, long view of bus terminal

(10 July 2002)
A long view of the bus terminal, looking in the direction of Nacka (the direction in which Saltsjöbanan runs), that gives a better idea of the size of this terminal.
